We Can Change The World - Avon Walk for Breast Cancer

Did you know that YOU can cure cancer? You don't even need to have any super powers to do it. Every year, nearly 41,000 people die from breast cancer alone. It affects everyone, including men and young women.

There is currently no cure for cancer, but there are many treatments available. There are currently 2 million breast cancer survivors in the US alone. The only way to find a CURE is to raise awareness, and to raise money. My great-aunt Rebekah is taking on both this year, and I would like to share her story with all of you.

Rebekah is a busy California mom with two little ones at home. This September, she and her friend Laura are teaming up to raise $3600 for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. It will be a tough two days as they walk 39.3 miles in the California heat!

Rebekah & Laura- Curing Cancer One Step At A Time!
Let's learn a little bit about this volunteer who is proving that anyone can cure cancer.

"My grandma was a breast cancer survivor. I was a child when she went through it, so I didn't understand her struggle but now as an adult, I can imagine her fight! I now walk in honor of her and also for my daughter and the other women in my life who have NOT been touched by breast cancer. I'm walking for them in the name of early detection and in the hopes that a cure will be found!"

"This is my first walk, and so far the experience has been HUMBLING! I'm humbled by people's generosity. As I train, my body is humbled by the distance. When my body is tired from walking, I'm reminded that millions of people are suffering much greater than I just suffered with my walk. There are also people who are currently struggling with cancer that are IN the Avon Walk. Humbling!"

While Rebekah & Laura are taking donations (Click here to help them reach their goal), they have not been waiting around idly! They have been hard at work finding unique ways to raise money. They've rallied friends, family and community to all work together. So far, they have hosted a yard sale and a bake sale. They've recently teamed up with some local businesses to have fundraiser nights. One Scentsy consultant has agreed to donate 100% of her commission to the cause! That's another hero right there! Scentsy is a safe, wick-less alternative to candles. You can buy some online, and still help the in the fight against breast cancer!  (Be sure to buy from Laura & Rebekah so they will get credit for the sale)

Rebekah is training hard, but stays positive and upbeat. You can appreciate a little of her sense of humor from her recent  Avon Walk for Breast Cancer blog post.

"Whew, training has been a lot of fun with many side benefits!
Here are some interesting numbers...
12 - the number of miles I walked last Saturday!
5 - the number of hours it took me to walk those miles :)
3 - the number of blisters I got on Saturday ;)
13.8 - the number of pounds I've lost since starting my training!
897 - the number of dollars you all have donated to make a difference in the lives of many!
1 - the number of people, who when helped, will have made this whole thing worth it for me. If even one person benefits, then my time and effort along with your donations have been WELL spent!"

We can't always volunteer physically, maybe we don't have the time right now or even the strength. Maybe you can't donate right now either. But you CAN spread the word. Early detection is still the best way to beat breast cancer. If you have a blog, Facebook, twitter, whatever, I ask you to help Rebekah and Laura take a stab at breast cancer by sharing their story. You can link to their page, or to this blog post. Every cent counts in research, treatment and awareness. You never know how many people may donate money to the cause, or who may even go get a life saving breast exam, just because YOU spread the word.

In the time that took you to read this post, 4 people died from cancer.
 Let's change that number!
